Give Thanks by Giving Back

November 18, 2014 by

For many, Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on one’s many blessings by making memories with family and friends over a warm Thanksgiving dinner. This year, show your gratitude during the holidays by volunteering at a local charity organization. Through volunteering, you will not only feel all warm and fuzzy inside, but you’ll spread love – and a smile – to your neighbors who need it most. Here is a list of volunteer opportunities within the Richmond Hill and Savannah areas:

The WAY Station – Founded in 1987, the WAY Station is a food pantry that serves the needs of South Bryan County with food, toiletries and clothing items. If you would like to volunteer with the WAY Station, or have questions, contact Terri Peterson at tpeterson52@hotmail.com.

The Salvation Army of Savannah– As Savannah’s largest homeless shelter, the Salvation Army of Savannah operates the area’s only 24-hour, 365-day-a-year emergency shelter for men, women and children. The emergency shelter and transitional housing programs provide casework services, clothing, employment assistance, lodging, meals and personal hygiene items. To learn about volunteer opportunities, contact John Korp at 912-200-3002 or volunteer4sally@hotmail.com.

“Food for the Soul” Soup Kitchen – Food for the Soul is an ecumenical community soup kitchen serving more than 300 meals to the needy in the Richmond Hill area. If you would like to get involved with Food for the Soul, please contact Diana South at south3d@comcast.net.

Inner City Night Shelter – Since 1983, Inner City Night Shelter (ICNS) has been an emergency shelter for chronically homeless adult men and women providing counseling, shelter, and supportive services that promote various levels of positive behavior change, self-sufficiency and independent living. In three decades, ICNS has served more than 1.4 million meals to the homeless. For more information, dial 912-232-4673 or email icns124@comcast.net.

Union Mission – Union Mission focuses on preventing and reducing homelessness in the greater Savannah area of Georgia. On a monthly basis, Union Mission provides 7,500 shelter nights and more than 20,000 meals and supportive services (counseling, recovery services, employment and training). For more information about Union Mission’s charitable giving opportunities please contact Lisa Jones at 912-236-7423, ext. 1317 or ljones@unionmission.org.
